This month, our CEO, Ewen Wardman, joined partner VILLANUEVA at Argentina’s leading agricultural and livestock exhibition to discuss the future of precision livestock farming, electronic identification and digital farm management.
Expo Rural is one of the most important events in Argentina’s agricultural calendar, bringing together livestock producers, technology providers and industry organisations from across the country and beyond.
With Argentina now implementing mandatory electronic identification, this year’s event provided a timely opportunity to discuss how connected technology can help producers meet new requirements while making better use of livestock data.

Sharing the value of connected livestock technology
During the exhibition, iLivestock CEO and Co-Founder Ewen Wardman presented alongside Alfonso Cebral, Livestock Business Unit Manager at VILLANUEVA.
Their presentation, “Know More to Produce Better: Identification, Weighing and Real-Time Management,” explored how electronic identification, connected weighing and farm management software can help producers capture reliable animal data, improve traceability and make better-informed decisions.
The central message was that EID should be viewed not only as a compliance requirement, but as the foundation for more efficient and productive livestock management.
Strengthening our partnership with VILLANUEVA
Expo Rural also highlighted the strength of iLivestock’s partnership with VILLANUEVA, our exclusive distribution partner in Argentina.
The partnership combines VILLANUEVA’s local knowledge and established presence in the Argentine livestock sector with iLivestock’s integrated platform of RFID readers, weighing equipment and farm management software.

Throughout the event, the VILLANUEVA team met with producers and industry specialists to discuss how connected technology can simplify data capture and turn animal information into useful management insights.
We would like to thank Federico Perez Wodtke, Alfonso Cebral, Matias Soto and the wider VILLANUEVA team for their warm hospitality, support and collaboration throughout the visit.
We were also pleased to connect with representatives from the British Embassy in Argentina during the trip and represent iLivestock within the wider relationship between the UK agri-tech sector and Argentina’s livestock industry.
Supporting Argentina’s transition to mandatory EID
The timing of Expo Rural was particularly relevant as Argentina implements its national electronic animal identification system.
Under the requirements set out by SENASA, cattle, buffalo and commercially farmed cervids in the calf category must be identified using approved low-frequency RFID devices from weaning or before their first movement, beginning on 1 January 2026.
The system uses an electronic identification device linked to a corresponding visual tag. SENASA’s technical framework also covers how devices are applied, registered and reported through Argentina’s animal-health management systems.
For producers, regulatory compliance is the immediate priority. However, electronic identification also establishes a reliable individual-animal data foundation.
When EID is connected with weighing equipment and livestock management software, producers can use the same identification data to monitor weight, performance, health and movements more effectively.
